Operation Mode Dial
Explanation: This dial determines the basic operation mode of the D7000. Because this is a crucial setting the operation modes are described in a dedicated chapter Operation modes of the D7000 at the beginning.
Here a summary:
AUTO: A fully automated mode to take photos as easily as possible.
The same automated mode but flash is suppressed.
SCENE: More fully automated modes for convenience as in AUTO but camera settings are optimised for a number of typical shooting situations.
The type of scene can be chosen with the main command dial at the back while the exposure metering if active (so tap slightly on the shutter release button if you turn the dial but no scene mode is displayed on the camera monitor).
P, S, A, M: Modes for advanced photographers because only here you have full control about all camera settings.
U1, U2: Two modes that you can configure with your favorite operation mode from above and all other settings that are relevant for taking pictures. They allow you to put the camera back to a basic configuration with your individual preferences instantly and whenever you need it.
Tips: This wheel is the most important setting as it determines the behaviour of many other settings and which settings you can – or have to! – choose on your own.
Please see the detailed recommendations in the chapter
Operation Modes of the D7000, the essence is:
- The three modes for fully automated shooting are suitable if you are not so familiar with the many settings of the D7000 or just want to shoot conveniently.
- To make best use of the D7000 capabilities you have to use the other modes and among them U1 and U2 are the best choice.
Reason: Their defaults are identical with the „programmed auto“ mode P which is the preferable mode from the other choices P, S, A, M but you have the additional advantage that you can permanently save and easily reset your own favorite settings.
