Examples for Different Lighting Conditions and Related White Balance

The following chart illustrates three different types of light, their impact on color rendition without any correction and how a corresponding white balance needs to adjust:

different types of lights and related corrections to be done by white balance

The reference for „neutral“ light that does not need any corrections is sunlight – the natural light to which our human perception has been „calibrated“ over thousands of years.

For any other lighting situation the same principle applies: Other sources of light and reflections in your environment can cause a color shift of the incoming light and need to be compensated with a shift in the opposite direction to get neutral colors on your images.
